Congratulations to the 2014-15 class of APSE Diversity Fellows. They are:

— Kami Mattioli, college basketball editor for The Sporting News who also has worked as an associate social media editor and columnist.

— Dana Sulonen, sports editor for the Opelika-Auburn (Ala.) News who was previously the sports editor at the Warren (Ohio) Tribune Chronicle.

— Alex Iniguez, designer/copy editor/web editor at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette who also has worked as a reporter and “twitter editor.’’

— Carron Phillips, assistant sports editor for the News-Dispatch in Michigan City (In.) who manages daily budgets, page layouts and employee schedules along with his writing duties.

This is the fourth year of the APSE Diversity Fellowship Program. APSE is the major sponsor, with support from Indiana University, which hosts a weekend of academic training. Past sponsors have included USA Today Sports Media Group, The Sporting News, the Association for Women in Sports Media, LANG Newspapers, U-T San Diego, Digital First Media, and former Fellow Michael Wallace.

This year’s Fellows will begin their fellowship experience by serving as members of the judging committees for the upcoming APSE web contest. They also will join membership and help judge at the winter conference in February in Orlando.

The Diversity Fellowship Program also includes participation in APSE’s Sports Management Program, the Sports Journalism Institute, the summer conference in San Diego and the professional development day for each Fellow’s region.

The training will prepare them to take a substantive leap forward in their careers as part of an overall push toward improving diversity by APSE.

If you are interested in helping sponsor this important APSE initiative, please contact APSE president Mike Sherman, executive director Jack Berninger or myself.
