USA TODAY seeks an editor to lead national coverage of race and equality issues as they intersect with sports. The candidate must have a passion and commitment to journalism that speaks to these issues, plus demonstrate a keen eye for storytelling and engaging readers. The candidate should be interested in the ways sports relate to larger topics in the realm of politics, business, entertainment and pop culture. He or she will specialize in generating unique enterprise, reacting to breaking news and advocating for more inclusiveness in stories, videos and other media. Depending on the candidate’s strengths, experience and preferences, we are open to considering a hybrid editing/writing role for this position. We encourage strong writers who have experience editing or an interest in doing so to apply. The ability to collaborate and work as part of a team of editors and reporters across the USA TODAY Sports Network is a must.

The ideal candidate should have:

•Demonstrated commitment to producing journalism that focuses on disparities and inclusion in sports

•Experience working with reporters to generate ideas and plan coverage

•Excellent editing, writing and reporting skills

•Ability to generate quick-turn news stories, thoughtful enterprise and in-depth projects

•Ability to lead and collaborate on projects across newsroom departments and the USA TODAY Network

•Strong understanding of audience analytics and how to use them to drive content decisions

•Bachelor’s in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•At least three years of experience working in a news organization
