No matter how big or small your market, sometimes there are just days where there isn't much going on.

"Quick and easy ways to generate content for slow days" sought to alleviate these concerns, especially in cities without professional or major college sports teams. The session, moderated by Todd M. Adams, sports editor at U-T San Diego, Mike Szvetitz, sports editor of the Opelika-Auburn News and Paul Skrbina, high school sports editor at the Chicago Tribune was a free-flowing brainstorming session centered on discussion between the panel and the attendees.

The panel suggested embracing alternative media and structures. For example, one solution might be involving people in the office who don't typically generate sports content.

Other examples raised by editors during the session:
  • Repackaging blog content into the print product
  • Historic content
  • Leftovers — additional notes that didn't make it into that week's game coverage
  • Live chat replay
  • Conversational and debate pieces — both roundtable and head-to-head
  • Mini-columns
  • Weekly quick-hit profiles
  • Reviews of stadium atmosphere and food
  • Q&As
  • Photo collages and poster spreads
  • Calendars
  • Reader-generated letters and social media replies
  • Players of the week
  • Polling
  • Stats and leaders
  • Standings
