Joe Schiefelbein, Executive Sports Editor at The Advocate/The New Orleans Advocate/The Acadiana Advocate, has been elected as the vice chair of the Southeast Region.

Joe has been with The Advocate full-time since 1995 — after six months as the sports editor of The Natchitoches Times — and in some capacity since 1991.

 

He was a stringer and a call-taker and a clerk at The Advocate — while also stringing for other organizations (LSU football for the Monroe News-Star, state college football for the Times-Picayune) while at LSU; with a start as a freelancer for the Hernando

Today in Brockville, Fla., and the Tampa Tribune. After working six months at the Natchitoches (La.) Times upon graduation, Joe was hired full-time by The Advocate.

At The Advocate, he has been, in order, a copy editor/paginator (November 1995-June 1998), an LSU men’s basketball beat writer (June 1998-May 1999), a Southern beat writer (May 1999-Ocober 2008), an LSU football beat writer and columnist (August 2008-May 2009), an assistant sports editor (March 2009-12) and the executive sports editor s

ince April 2012. And, yes, some of those dates overlap as he “had dual roles.”

After becoming executive sports editor, Joe joined the APSE in 2012, attending his first summer conference in Chicago that summer.

“Through fellowship, education and call after email after tweet for help, as well as national and regional conferences and judging, APSE has been there for me since I took this post in April 2012. Having learned how APSE works and after having gotten to know so many of you in that span, there’s an urge and responsibility to take on more ownership in the organization and start contributing more.”
