This painting/portrait of Bill Dwyre was commissioned to run with his final Los Angeles Times column as a full-time staff member.

The Associated Press Sports Editors celebrates its 50th year in 2023. A series of interviews with the organization’s past presidents will be unveiled throughout the year to mark this milestone.

Bill Dwyre was the APSE president in 1988-89 while he was sports editor at the Los Angeles Times. Dwyre also received the 1996 Red Smith Award. He is interviewed by St. Louis Post-Dispatch digital sports editor Erik Hall.

Dwyre talks about how APSE helped him form valuable personal relationships with Sandy Bailey, Dave Smith, George Solomon and Ed Storin – all winners of the Red Smith Award.

He remembers the experience of being the chauffeur for Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz when Holtz spoke at an APSE convention in St. Louis. Dwyre also tells the story of “St. Elsewhere” star Howie Mandel attending an APSE convention in Santa Monica, California.

If you are a former APSE president and have yet to conduct or schedule an interview, reach out to Erik Hall at hallerik7@gmail.com.
