Mike Sherman, sports editor of The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City, and Tommy Deas, executive sports editor of the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News, have been elected as the new 2nd Vice President and 3rd Vice President of the Associated Press Sports Editors, the organization announced Tuesday.
 
Sherman and Deas will take office at the APSE summer conference in Chicago later this month. They will join incoming APSE President Gerry Ahern of USA Today Sports Media Group and incoming 1st Vice President Tim Stephens of the Orlando Sentinel/South Florida Sun Sentinel as officers for 2012-13.
 
Sherman will serve a one-year term as the 2nd vice president, then a year as the 1st vice president. He will ascend to presidency in 2014. Deas, elected to represent newspapers in the under-40,000 circulation class, will serve a two-year term.
 
Sherman has served as sports editor of The Oklahoman since 2003. He previously had stints the Oklahoma City Times, the Daily Local News in West Chester, Pa., the Utica Observer-Dispatch, and The Tennessean in Nashville. As a member of APSE, he has previously served as a contest judge multiple times and recently served as Great Plains region chair.
 
Deas has worked at the Tuscaloosa News since 1993 and served as the newspaper's executive sports editor since 2008. He previously worked at the Nashville Banner and at The Sports Page. As a member of APSE, he has judged numerous contents and currently serves as Southeast Region vice-chair.
