The Santa Cruz Sentinel (Scotts Valley, Calif.) and Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, Ill.) tied for first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors 2013 contest in the multimedia category for under 500,000 visitors.
Both entries will be presented with a first-place plaque at the 2014 APSE banquet June 28 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va.
Santa Cruz Sentinel staffers Andrew Matheson, Jim Seimas and Tony Solis' winning entry (https://www.youtube.co/watch?v=-fsgqlr-4Zs) consisted of the Double Coverage football team tracking every program in the county for the 2013 season, producing nearly 50 episodes that included season outlooks plus thrice weekly shows for all 13 weeks of the season. Each video ranged from 7-12 minutes.
Northwest Herald staffers Dan Mott, Les Johnson, Joe Stevenson, Jaso Pfrommer and Erick Ward created "The Fastest Four Minutes" _ a prep football highlights video package.
Daily Chronicle staffer John Sahly's piece about Zach Darcy, a 5-year-old battling leukemia, tackling NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch (http://www.nwherald.com/video/?videoid=2715091487001) finished third.
The top 10 is listed below with links, when available, to each entry.
In early March, preliminary judges at the APSE Winter Conference in Indianapolis selected a top 10.
