The (San Luis Obispo) Tribune, a 35,000-circulation daily on California’s beautiful Central Coast, is seeking a sports editor to lead a great sports staff in both digital and print. The Tribune’s sports section, which has consistently won state and national awards, covers more than a dozen area high schools, a Division 1 level university and a strong community college.

The successful candidate must articulate a vision for making The Tribune’s digital sports report a top destination for readers and must be able to guide our staff in developing stories (game coverage, features and hard news), producing video, and helping us grow our audience on social media platforms. We are a true digital-first environment, with an 8:15 p.m. print deadline.

Candidates need to have worked in sports as reporters and preferably in an editing capacity on a sports desk as well. At least three years’ experience in daily journalism is required. The Sports Editor will work with a staff of two reporters, a copy editor and seasonal interns to produce a report that is vigorous, alert, substantive and enterprising. In addition to producing a strong daily report, including handling some print design and layout duties, the editor is also tasked with ensuring strong enterprise stories for our website, www.sanluisobispo.com, and The Tribune’s front page.

We’re a McClatchy Co. newspaper and are committed to individual development and offer excellent benefits. San Luis Obispo is a terrific environment in which to live and work. It’s an area rich with outdoor diversions and unbeatable weather. We are located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, seven miles from the Pacific Ocean.
