Former APSE president Gerry Ahern presents Dan Jenkins with the 2013 Red Smith Award. The Moody College of Communications has recently created the Dan Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Red Smith Award. The award is presented to a person who has made major contributions to sports journalism.
Leigh Montville was last year’s winner and the next five people in the voting are automatically nominated for this year’s award. They are Henry Freeman, Dick Young, George Vecsey, Terry Taylor and Sandy Rosenbush.
Other 2016 nominees were Kirk Bohls, Bryan Burwell, Tom Callahan, Leon Carter, Rick Clarkson, Stan Hochman, Phil Jasner, Sally Jenkins, Roy McHugh, Bill Plaschke, Terry Pluto, and William Rhoden. They will have to be re-nominated in 2017.
Nominations will close Wednesday, February 15. When making a nomination please include biographical information advocating for the person.
Ballots will be sent out Friday, February 19. Biographical information will be included in that ballot for both the automatic nominees and new nominees. The deadline to vote is Friday, March 3.
