Newly named sports editor John Quinn says his mission is one that will ring familiar to most of his peers.

"The push is to get the Inquirer into the 21st century in social media and online capabilities," Quinn said.

He took over as sports editor of the Inquirer on Oct. 8, replacing Jim Cohen.

He and his staff had an immediate challenge.

"It is a testament to the highly dedicated and motivated staff that it was able to perform at supremely high levels in the following three-week Phillies' push for a third straight World Series appearance," Quinn said.

The Phillies, however, were not able to perform at high enough level to get there.

Quinn, who was promoted from deputy sports editor, previously has been sports editor at the Asbury Park Press from 1995 to 2004, Sunday sports editor at Newsday from 1986 to 2004 and sports editor at the Stamford (Conn.) Advocate.

"We have a great staff of writers with varying levels of technological skills," Quinn said of the Inquirer sports department. "Video content and APP developments will be the immediate challenge. Striving for enterprise and excellence will not be diminished, but the quest for new and interesting content in every medium will be front and center."
