Game accounts should tell a story — and bring readers something they didn’t know or didn’t see. It should be authoritative and analytical, and it should be fun to read. The story should be a descriptive, active account of the game based on behind-the-scenes reporting, not just a play-by-play supported by mundane postgame quotes.

This is not exactly a new concept, but it’s one that many papers have gotten away from and should return to.

“How to Write the Perfect Game Story” is among the sessions offered at the Associated Press Sports Editors annual convention June 23 to 26 in Salt Lake City.

Others include Prep Coverage, Best Ideas, and Watchdog journalism.
