On-site judges pose for a 'team picture' at the APSE winter conference Feb. 26, 2023, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Hello, APSE fam and friends:

If you haven’t yet noticed, let me be the first to clue you in: It’s October.

As such, pretty much everything is underway. October means postseason baseball, of course; the WNBA playoffs are in full swing; the NFL and college football have taken center stage; the NHL is back; high school sports are hot and heavy … and if you’re missing the NBA, fear not. Those guys are coming spoon.

In other words, your schedule is full.

But please, please, please take just a few minutes this month to renew your APSE membership or join for the first time. The membership deadline is Oct. 31.

When you become an APSE member, you join a community of forward-thinking sports editors and writers who are committed to the highest standards of journalism while supporting each other through networking, mentorship and career development. And when I say community, that’s exactly what I mean.

If you’ve been a longtime member, you already know this. If you’ve always wondered, please understand: There’s a unique bond; a deep level of connection and camaraderie that exists among members. Veterans and newcomers will attest, it’s deeper and unlike that of any other organization out there, and it’s why so many of us are so passionate about APSE.

Here are some benefits of membership:

  • Paying dues allows an organization to enter the 2026 APSE Contest. Contest chair Erik Hall is just about ready to send out a sneak preview of the 2026 rules, and the deadline to enter the contest will be in January. Judging will be in person Feb. 28-March 4 in Las Vegas, and remotely. You can reach Erik with any contest questions at hallerik7@gmail.com.
  • Invites to virtual workshops, region meetings and our summer conference, which will be June 10-12 in Denver.
  • A community of editors and writers who can provide advice/support, share best practices and help you deal with issues large and small. APSE is a great resource for journalists who are early in their career, those who are in career transition and industry veterans.
  • A network of journalists for recruitment and potential hire, whether it’s students for an internship, early-career journalists and potential sports editors.
  • Access to the APSE directory.

For the financial stability of the organization, it was necessary to raise dues slightly for 2027.

Renew your membership or join for the first time here.
