Entries must be postmarked by Feb. 10, 2009.

ELIGIBILITY
Both APSE members and non-member papers in Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado are eligible.

CIRCULATION CATEGORIES
■ Class 3: Under 15,000
■ Class 2: 15,001 to 40,000
■ Class 1: 40,001 to 100,000
Categories based on daily circulation.

JUDGING
Will be done in the months of February and March by other papers in the region that have expressed interest.

Judges will not judge papers in their own circulation classes.

Judges will select top three and up to two honorable mentions in all categories.

WRITING DIVISIONS
■ Entries from APSE-member papers can be copies of APSE contest entries.

Any entry can be a clipped version of the original story, taped or glued on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. Folding is not permitted. Multiple sheets can be stapled together. Library printouts are not accepted.

■ Remove all headlines, graphics, bylines or any identifying objects as well as any references to the paper in the story.

■ Entries must be writtten by members of the sports department or directed by the sports department.

■ Writing entries must be accompanied by an enclosure on newspaper stationery with a list identifying the writers of each entry. (Breaking News-1: John Doe; Breaking News-2: Bill Smith) corresponding to the number on the entry.

WRITING CATEGORIES
■ Breaking news (3 entries per paper)

■ Game story (3 entries per paper)

■ Feature story (3 entries per paper)

■ Columns (2 entries per paper to include 4 separate columns each)

■ Enterpise project (2 entries per paper of any explanatory story, project or investigative package; cover letter allowed to summarize packages, provide context or detail impact).

SECTION DIVISION
■ An entry will consist of four sections, any two consecutive days, including Sunday, from the same month as the mandatory dates for the APSE daily contest (This year’s chosen months are March and November). The entry can also include sports material in other sections of the paper on those days, however, standalone preseason preview sections (such as the basketball section) may not be included.

■ Entries must include a 3-by-5-inch index card with circulation category, paper, city, daily circulation, days of publications (7 day, Mon-Sat, Sun-Fri, etc.)

PREPARING ENTRIES
See the APSE national contest for directions on how to prepare the list of writers for the writing contest. You must number your entries (Game story 1, Game story 2) and match the entry with the writers on the list on your letterhead.
