Henry Freeman, the founding sports editor of USA TODAY, has announced he will retire as vice president/news of the Journal News in suburban New York City at the end of the year.

Freeman, 63, who was president of the Associated Press Sports Editors from 1987-88, has served in a variety of newsroom roles over a distinguished career.

"It's been a terrific run," said Freeman, the former publisher of the Courier News in Bridgewater, N.J., and editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Del. "I still love what we do. There's a charge that comes when a news story breaks that you can't get anywhere else."
