Tommy Deas is the new second vice president of APSE, and John Bednarowski will be the third VP for the next two years.

In month-long election that ended April 30, Deas, executive sports editor at The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News, defeated Mark Faller of the Arizona Republic, Lisa Wilson of The Buffalo News and Hank Winnicki of Newsday.

Bednarowski, sports editor of the Marietta (Ga.) Daily Journal, will serve a two-year term representing newspapers with under 40,000 circulation and stand-alone websites with fewer than 250,000 unique monthly visitors. He defeated Robert Gagliardi of WyoSports and Mike Szvetitz of the Opelika-Auburn (Ala.) News.

Deas and Bednarowski will assume their duties at the closing executive committee meeting at APSE's June 25-28 Metro D.C. Conference at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va. At that time, Mike Sherman of The Oklahoman will become president and Mary Byrne of USA TODAY Sports will become first vice president.

Deas covered everything from high schools to University of Alabama football for The Tuscaloosa News before being promoted to his current post in 2008. He was recognized as part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that covered the aftermath of a devastating 2011 tornado that ravaged Tuscaloosa, and  he has won numerous APSE writing awards. He is also on the executive board of the Alabama Sports Writers Association and is completing his two-year term as APSE's third vice president.

Bednarowski worked for the now-defunct Birmingham Post Herald the St. Clair News-Aegis in Pell City, Ala., and at the Gadsden Times in Gadsden, Ala., before being named sports editor of the Daily Journal in 2006. He was APSE's Southeast Region chair 2011-13.
