Jon Johnson replaces new VP as chair

John Bednarowski of the Marietta Daily Journal and Cherokee Tribune was elected vice chair of the Southeast Region at APSE’s annual meetings in Pittsburgh.

Jon Johnson of the Dothan Eagle is replacing Phil Kaplan as chair of the region. Kaplan is APSE’s new first vice president. Johnson and Bednarowski are beginning two-year terms, with Bednarowski becoming the region chair in 2011.

Bednarowski, an Ohio native, is in his third year as sports editor of the two Atlanta suburban dailies.

He is a graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Bednarowski has worked as sports editor of the St. Clair News-Aegis in Pell City, Ala., as a correspondent for the Birmingham News and as a sports writer at the Gadsden (Ala.) Times before taking over in Marietta.

This year, the MDJ was recognized by APSE for having one of the 10 best Sunday sports sections by a paper with circulation under 20,000. Bednarowski also was recognized by the Georgia Sports Writers Association as the Division II (circulation under 40,000) columnist of the year.

Bednarowski, 40, and his wife Andrea have been married for nine years.
