Last summer APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor one college student as a member of our organization.
For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Ahern also asked sponsoring editors to help help mentor the student as they prepare to enter the profession.

Today, meet a University of Minnesota-Duluth graduate sponsored by Loren Nelson.
Zack Friedli
College status: Graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in spring 2013 with major in political science and minor in journalism. Awarded USA Hockey's Brian Fishman Internship.

Experience: Covered high school hockey for Sport Ngin's Minnesota Hockey Hub in partnership with the Star Tribune. Covered college hockey and the NHL for Inside Hockey and became editor in 2011. Assisted the UMD athletics department with development of media guides, some online content and social media initiatives.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? I always enjoyed writing when I was younger, and I stumbled into an internship during my second year of college. Ever since then I've known sports journalism was what I wanted to do as a career.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? I've learned that quality trumps quantity. The Internet and social media give anyone the opportunity to write about sports, but the quality of writing is what sets people apart. Generating article after article might get you noticed, but excellent writing and great coverage really make the difference.
Dream job? Covering the Minnesota Wild for the Minneapolis Star Tribune or the Boston Red Sox for the Boston Globe.
Interests/hobbies/activities: Played varsity high school hockey at Rochester Mayo … traveling, golfing, playing hockey and reading.
