For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

Today, meet a Castleton State College junior sponsored by Greg Brownell of the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star.
Kaylee Pratt
College status: Junior at Castleton State College in 2013-14
Sponsoring member: Greg Brownell, Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star
Experience: Student writer and appointed sports editor for 2014 for the Castleton Spartan, the student newspaper of Castleton State College.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? I have always had a passion for writing but I never thought of actually doing anything with it until my freshman year of college. After declaring my major as journalism, joining the school’s paper and enrolling in a few journalism classes, I realized how much I loved writing. Sports have always played such an important role in my life, and being able to write about something I enjoy was a perfect combination. Being appointed sports editor of the college’s paper was just an added bonus.
Most important thing I’ve learned? Tell a story like you’re telling it to your friend. Make sure you and the reader understand what you’re writing about and entice them to read more. Also use quotes as “chocolate chips” to your story, as my professor always says. They need to be great quotes that are meaningful and ones that will reel the reader in.
Dream job? Sports or nutrition writer.
Hobbies/interestes/activities: Volleyball, writing, exercising, hiking, and spending time with friends and family members.
