For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

Today, meet an Elon University senior sponsored by Dan Spears.
Hannah DelaCourt
College status: Senior at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina, graduating in May 2014.

Experience: Sports intern at StarNews during summer 2013. Covered the Wilmington Sharks, a summer collegiate baseball team. Covered breaking news and feature stories about high school football, basketball, mountain biking, triathlons/marathons, rugby, CrossFit, sport fishing, golf and surfing.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? Having played sports since I was seven, I feel like I have tried almost everything at least once. I love writing and, by my sophomore year of high school I found myself combining my two passions and competing with the boys as the only female sports writer on my school paper. I’m competitive. I love playing sports and I love trying to wrap my head around the ones that I have never played – which is how I found myself covering, and loving my time spent at, a rugby sevens tournament this summer.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Everyone has a story to tell. It is up to us as writers and journalists to find those that should be reported on and shared with others.
Dream job? I would like to be up north covering sports. Whether it is covering high school sports for a local publication or reporting on professional teams, I hope that I am challenged every day in my writing and reporting.
Hobbies/interests/activities: Reading and writing. … playing variety of intramural sports, including co-ed football, soccer and wallyball (wallyball is volleyball played against the walls of a racquetball court).
