APSE will return to Hampton University on Nov. 9 for another Day of Diversity.

This will be the third year that APSE will be at the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications on the Hampton, Va., campus. And for the third consecutive year, the Scripps Howard Foundation will offer internship stipends to two Hampton students interested in careers in journalism. The two students chosen receive a $3,000 stipend and a $500 scholarship for the summer of 2011.

Both students will be placed at APSE member newspapers. The Sacramento Bee, Riverside Press-Enterprise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Baltimore Sun have been the host papers the past two years.

This year, the Sports Journalism Institute joined as a partner to the program. Under the umbrella of SJI, both interns from Hampton spent nine days at the journalism boot camp held at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., before starting internships.

The cost of the lunch for students at Hampton this year has been covered by the financial support of The Daily Press, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginian-Pilot, USA Today and AOL FanHouse.

As for the Nov.9 program, former APSE president Lynn Hoppes, a senior director at ESPN.com., will moderate a panel discussion on subjects related to journalism with senior assistant sports editor Greg Lee of the Boston Globe, sports writer Lisa Olson of AOL Fanhouse and copy editor Florence Brown of USA Today, who is a graduate of Hampton.

Later in the day, students will cover the football team's media availability. The event will be documented with stories, photos, videos and social media.
