The Associated Press Sports Editors celebrates its 50th year in 2023. A series of interviews with the organization’s past presidents will be unveiled throughout the year to mark this milestone.

Bill Eichenberger was the APSE president in 2003-04 while he was sports editor at Newsday. He is interviewed by St. Louis Post-Dispatch digital sports editor Erik Hall.

He reflects on more than 35 years of attending APSE events, ascending to the president of the organization, and then becoming APSE executive director. His involvement in the organization increased over the years because whenever he could, he’d say yes to helping APSE.

Eichenberger shares stories about some of the important and influential mentors during his career, and that includes 1992 Red Smith Award winner Ed Storin. He calls attending APSE events, “finding his people.”
