Stony Brook University’s application to form an APSE student chapter has been approved by the Associated Press Sports Editors executive committee.
Stony Brook, based on Long Island, said in its application, written by chapter president Kevin Broderick, that “what has shaped Stony Brook sports reporters is simply using every available resource to our advantage. Joining APSE would add to that list of resources and would instantly become one of the most valuable.”
The chapter will be advised by Professor Richard E. Ricioppo. The student chapter has 12 listed members, and its application was supported by APSE alumnus John Quinn.
Under chapter plans, Broderick cited gaining “access to high quality articles” to get a better look at what “good journalism looks like” and the industry connections APSE provides, writing that the chapter “would love to host APSE members as guest speakers whenever possible.”
APSE’s student-chapter program was created by former APSE president Tim Stephens to expand educational outreach and help develop the next generation of sports journalists.
