Rowan University’s application to form an APSE student chapter has been approved by the Associated Press Sports Editors executive committee.

Rowan, based in Glassboro, New Jersey, said in its application that the decision “stems from the belief in high quality, ethical, and inclusive sports journalism,” adding that the chapter aims to connect aspiring sports media students with APSE’s national network of professionals. The university highlighted its rapidly growing sports communication and media degree, launched in 2018 through the Rowan University Center for Sports Communication & Social Impact, and noted that the program welcomed its largest freshman class this fall.

The chapter will be advised by Professor Mike Rosenstein. Student journalist Sarah Shockey will serve as chapter president, with support from vice president Katie Thorn and other interested students. Rowan’s application was supported by former APSE president Lisa Wilson.

APSE’s student-chapter program was created by former APSE president Tim Stephens to expand educational outreach and help develop the next generation of sports journalists.
