The Seattle Times is seeking an Assistant Sports Editor to lead the sports copy desk and direct multi-platform coverage of high-school sports. This fast-paced role calls for a calm, detail-oriented editor who is a quick thinker, communicates well and can regularly multitask while facing tight deadline pressure. Working with editors, designers and reporters, this manager will direct the team that produces the daily sports section and handles digital sports duties – such as curating the website, sending news alerts and posting stories on social media. This editor also will hire and direct freelance journalists to coordinate high-schools coverage. The Assistant Sports Editor reports to the Sports Editor.
Schedule: This editor works nights and weekends, likely Tuesday through Saturday or Wednesday through Sunday. The schedule also may occasionally change, as dictated by events and news. The position is a hybrid of in-person and remote work.

Responsibilities
- Work closely with Sports Desk Editors, Sports Designers and others to direct production of the daily sports section and handle digital duties – such as curating the website, sending news alerts and posting stories on social media.
- Thrive in high-pressure situations when deadlines are tight.
- Edit sports stories as they are filed at night, quickly posting them online and sending them to the sports copy desk for print.
- Demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in coverage, including sourcing and framing.
- Use digital tools to monitor audience interest in stories and boost readership online.
- Work with colleagues in Photo, Graphics/Interactives and the Digital Audience Team to coordinate visuals and digital assets for stories.

- Experience: 5+ years of experience at a metropolitan daily media organization, including 2+ years of supervisory experience, preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience.
- Must have thorough knowledge of, and deep interest in, sports.
- Must have or quickly develop broad and thorough knowledge of Seattle-area and national sports at all levels.
- Passionate editor who sets a high standard for yourself and those around you.
- Proven skills with digital analytics.
- Ability to analyze stories and make quick, informed judgments about content, libel, accuracy and newsworthiness under pressure and on deadline.
- Must be a proactive communicator who is organized and adept at planning.
