Treasurer’s report: Finish in the "dark pink" with revenue shortfall of $2,549.
Looking at possible $30,000 deficit at convention, could get better if hotel sells more rooms. 60 registered, 112 last year, averaged 155 last five years. $10,000 shy of normal registration for convention. Large deficit at judging because of rooms.
334 in organization, down 56; 570 total in organization, down from 677. Reflects what is going on in the industry.
Hoppes: No question that APSE will go forward. Next four days very important how APSE will move ahead.
Michael Anastasi, commissioners: Met in April, numbers down. Question is should we continue. There is value from face time. Reality of cost and a lot to put together for the program. Best use of time, resources? Possibility of rotating meetings (every three years).
Could invite commissioners to our meetings.
Roy Hewitt, Olympics: Notice to give names of reporter, photographers for credentials will arrive soon. Deadline is Aug. 31.
Phil Kaplan, regions: All regions held meetings except Canada, Southwest.
Joe Sullivan, futures: Need to keep having convention; as for judging it appears Indianapolis a future site and possibly future meetings. Need to revisit judging categories and circulation categories. Will make proposal soon. Greg Brownell has offered to look over the bylaws to see what is outdated and needs to be flexible.
Old Business: student membership, Scripps Day at Hampton, APSE on Facebook, APSE on Twitter, online membership, AWSM attending region meetings, Hoppes blogging on APSE, voting online, continue to provide scholarships, partnership with Indiana U.; better region region meetings.
Hampton: Phil Kaplan reported APSE will return to Hampton University School of Journalism likely in November. General session for students followed by breakouts in lab with specific students in sports journalism. APSE will again offer two scholarships through Scripps Howard Foundation.
APSE scholarship: Gave out four this past year. Will again offer four. 15 have applied.
May have to simplify process to get more applicants.
Salt Lake City: Anastasi showed video detailing Salt Lake City convention to be held
June 23-26, 2010. Hoppes said Salt Lake City is definitely happening. Will involve other organizations.
Indiana University: Howard said alliance is set for national headquarters for APSE. In process of transferring Web site to them. Likely will launch Web site in August. It extends our organization and expands at same time. Incoming president will be on advisory board at IU. Helps APSE financially.
Will look to start APSE’s Hall of Fame there.
Sponsorships: Issues with organizations like NASCAR, UFC and others paying for APSE breakfasts, etc. Credibility issue?
Motion by Jerry Micco to end meeting, second by Ruben Luna.
