TO: APSE membership
FROM: Convention coordinator John Bednarowski
Time is growing short to make your hotel reservations for the 2026 summer convention from July 16-18 in the Washington, D.C., area.
Reservations must be made by Monday (June 1). It is unlikely there will be any extension to the cutoff date. So please make those reservations today.
The convention hotel will be the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va.
To make reservations, click on the link: https://book.passkey.com/event/51122352/owner/1487/home
The hotel rate will be $169 per night. Again, reservations must be made by June 1.
Added to the program will be the Thursday night opening reception with the Washington Mystics. There will be a gathering in a venue next to CareFirst Arena prior to the 7 p.m. tipoff against the Portland Fire.
There is no additional cost for the reception, but we will need to purchase tickets to attend the game. You can do that here: https://www.gofevo.com/event/Apse2
Other expected highlights of the week include sessions and workshops discussing:
+ Washington Post layoffs: Where do we go from here?
+ How to maximize our most precious resource – time management
+ Best practices for FOIA requests
+ Going all in on high school sports coverage
+ Reporting with accuracy and respect on LGBTQ+ issues in sports
+ Best practices for vertical video
+ Where we’re at with NIL legislation?
In addition, we will celebrate Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy as the winner of the Red Smith Award and recognize the best work from around the country at our annual awards banquet.
Registration for the convention is now open. Attendees must register by June 26 at https://associatedpresssportseditors.regfox.com/associated-press-sports-editors-summer-conference-2026
Latest on double rooms (updated Saturday, May 30)
With just a couple of days left before the cutoff date for our hotel reservations for the 2026 summer conference, the Crystal Gateway Marriott is nearing capacity for our dates.
Double rooms have become a challenge, as there is another large group that has booked up the remainder. Double rooms are now sold out for the 15th and 16th.
Standard king rooms are still available for the convention dates of the 16th, 17th and 18th.
Those who need to book doubles, we request you book the 15th and/or the 16th at the Westin, which is directly across the street. Cost is $204 per night. Then come back to the convention hotel the final two nights.
Thank you for your understanding.
