About the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

On Dec. 9, 1878, a young journalist named Joseph Pulitzer purchased a bankrupt newspaper entitled the St. Louis Dispatch on the steps of the St. Louis Courthouse for $2,500.  Three days later, he merged this newspaper with another local paper, the struggling Evening Post, and this unified newspaper became known as the St. Louis Post and Dispatch.

A commitment to progress, justice and accuracy were at the core of Joseph Pulitzer’s journalistic devotion. He reinvented the American newspaper and developed the Pulitzer Prize, the top award for journalistic excellence. The Post-Dispatch has won 19 of the esteemed awards.

The sports team has distinguished itself as one of the best in the country, with multiple Beat Writer of the Year awards from Associated Press Sports Editors for our baseball coverage; a Beat Writer of the Year award from the Football Writers Association of America; and numerous awards for event coverage, breaking news coverage and columns.
