Current vice chair Gustus promoted to chair, replacing Anastasi

Loren Nelson of the North County Times was elected vice chair of the West Region at APSE’s annual meetings in Pittsburgh.

Nelson has been sports editor at the Escondido, Calif.-based news organization since 2006. He previously worked as sports editor of the Bradenton Herald in Florida for three years before making the cross-country move.

A Minnesota native, Nelson also has worked at newspapers in southern Minnesota (St. Peter Herald, Owatonna People’s Press) and in northwest Wisconsin (Eau Claire Leader-Telegram).

During the West Region’s annual meeting in November, Nelson helped coordinate a session on creating and executing prep enterprise. He has been involved in APSE’s contest judging at the annual winter meetings four of the last five years.

Lauren Gustus of the Reno Gazette-Journal is replacing Michael Anastasi as chair of the region. Anastasi is APSE’s new second vice president. Gustus and Nelson are beginning two-year terms, with Nelson becoming the region chair in 2011.

Also in Pittsburgh, the region’s annual meeting was scheduled. It will take place in Los Angeles on Monday, Nov. 2. It will be the first region meeting held in conjunction with area members of AWSM, the Association for Women in Sports Media.
