Today, meet a Boston University sophomore sponsored by Justin Pelletier.
Sarah Kirkpatrick
College status: Sophomore at Boston University in 2013-14
Sponsoring member: Justin Pelletier, Sun Journal (Lewiston, Maine)
Experience: Sports Editor at The Daily Free Press, the independent student newspaper at Boston University, covering women’s hockey, cross country and track. Interned during the summer of 2013 for She’s Game Sports.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? My love of writing actually came long before my love of sports. I wrote for my elementary school’s newspaper, and I’m not sure if that’s exactly what spurred my interest in journalism, but it probably played somewhat of a role. This love of writing continued to grow and in high school, when I really became a huge sports fan. I found that sports writing was really similar to my particular style of writing, and I decided to give it a shot. I joined The Daily Free Press staff when I came to BU, and after writing a few articles, I knew sports journalism was what I wanted to do with my life.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Probably the most important thing I’ve learned is not to second-guess myself. I’m very detail-oriented, but there’s a fine line between being meticulous and being overly critical. Confidence goes a long way.
Dream job? I’d love to be a beat writer for any professional baseball team, but lately I’ve become more interested in longform.
Hobbies/interests/activities: Treasurer of the BU chapters of the Association for Women in Sports Media and Society of Professional Journalists. … Discovering new music, going to concerts, cooking, shopping and drinking as much coffee as possible.
