Social Media and Ethics in Sports Journalism
Social media has become one of the most valuable tools in the news-breaking journalist’s toolbox. In the wake of the premature death of Joe Paterno on Twitter, we examine the responsibilities of journalists in regard to using social media as a reporting tool at a number of different levels. How similar or different are those responsibilities in comparison to the use of traditional sources, and what are the positives/negatives of Twitter, Facebook and Storify as reporting tools? Also, what is the next wave of social media tools for journalists? And what are some other problems we might encounter down the road?
Location: Kane (3rd floor)
Leader: Stefanie Loh, The Patriot-News (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
Panelists: Richard Deitsch, Sports Illustrated/SI.com; Robert Gagliardi, Wyoming Tribune Eagle/WyoSports (Cheyenne); Teddy Greenstein, Chicago Tribune

2:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Workshop
Branding your local coverage
How do you identify the specialty of your sports section?
When you identify your specialty, how do you use it to give your reader something extra, but also find additional revenue streams to make it profitable. For smaller papers, finding that specialty could be the difference between having a two person staff or three. This workshop will show how the Marietta Daily Journal turned high school football coverage into Cobb Football Friday, how the Northwest Herald took prep sports and made McHenry County Sports.com, how the Times of Northwest Indiana became NWI Preps with multiple zoned coverage and how the Williamsport Sun-Gazette became the go-to publication for the Little League World Series.
Location: Clark (4th floor)
Leader: Ben Brigandi, Williamsport (Pa.) Sun-Gazette
Panelists: John Bednarowski, Marietta (Ga.) Daily Journal; Courtney Linehan, Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster); Eric Olson, Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, Ill.)

The Re-emphasis on Sunday
Circulation generally has continued to fall for our print products on weekdays, but the Sunday paper is making a comeback. Readers have more time on Sundays to spend with us, and they like the extra value of the big papers with their many ads and inserts, but it’s up to us to capitalize on this and deliver a product that’s worth their investment of time and money. Recognizing something we always knew but perhaps took for granted, many organizations are re-investing in the Sunday core product and the revenue it can drive. This session looks at not only breathing new life into your Sunday section (which probably has suffered from a resource drain), but how to integrate with your digital approach, since Sunday is likely your lowest traffic day on the web.
