Stories will consist of a News Now game lead, a write thru with the game details, an optional lead with quotes from the winners and a Hometown Lead with quotes from the other team.

This year’s Day of Diversity theme at Hampton University was “Covering Michael Vick” and students were able to discuss the career of the NFL quarterback as well as various other topics. Led by moderator Emilio Garcia-Ruiz of the Washington Post, students had the opportunity to hear stories and commentary from ESPN analyst Jemele Hill, Daily Press columnist David Teel, Washington Times sports editor Mike Harris and ESPN.com writer Ashley Fox.

APSE Diversity Fellows heard Indiana University visiting professer Bill Oates present his seminar “Leadership Styles: What Can Business Learn From Sports?” on Nov. 5 in Indianapolis. The presentation was part of IU’s series of seminars on leadership given to the inaugural class of the APSE Diversity Fellowship program. “You can be effective with any style,” Oates said, “but it has to be your style.”

To be successful, an editor can’t have just partial knowledge of the field they’re in. Picking up and reading material from the competition, getting a firm grasp on how advertising actually works, knowing your company’s profit margins and learning about how the latest technology can improve or impact your model as newsmakers are part of intricate nuances a leader in the sports department must be able to understand.
