For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

Today, meet a Virginia Tech junior sponsored by Carrie Cousins.
Jacob Emert
College status: Junior at Virginia Tech in 2013-14 studying multimedia journalism and history.

Experience: Covered NYC high school baseball playoffs for the New York Daily News. Sports editor and Hokies football/baseball beat writer for Virginia Tech’s Collegiate Times.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? When I was three years old my grandma tucked a sweet potato under my arm, showed me how to hold it high and tight, and chased me around the house like a middle linebacker; since that day sports have been my passion. I didn’t realize my joy for writing about them until I was unsatisfied in other fields of study. As soon as I began writing for the Collegiate Times I realized that covering sports is what I wanted to do for my life.
What's the most important thing you've learned? I hate losing more than I love winning. When I was 12 years old I lost a Little League game on ESPN, ending my season one game shy of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. I looked around at all my teammates who were crying because their dreams weren’t going to be realized. It hit me then that the agony from falling short is so much stronger than the elation from success. It’s also an unbelievable motivator.
Dream job? My dream job would be to travel the country and the world, writing enterprise stories about underrepresented people through the eyes of sports. Before that though, I’d love to get the chance to cover a MLB or major NCAA Division I beat.
