The Daytona Beach News-Journal is seeking a sports editor to lead coverage of sports in Volusia County and St. Johns County, including NASCAR/Daytona content, Bethune-Cookman University and area high school athletics.

It is a high-profile, high-demand job with great benefits, key among them showcasing the award-winning work of our top-flight sports writers and working with the USA TODAY Network to present this on many platforms, including our Gannett Florida sports network.

The successful candidate will help cover Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR with a combination of editing and writing skills. This includes planning multi-media, multi-platform coverage for local races, along with writing columns and analysis pieces, enterprise efforts and event coverage as well as being the lead writer for our weekly NASCAR page.

They will have a digital-first mindset, and skills to take full advantage of our opportunities to build our loyal audience for NASCAR coverage around the county, throughout Florida and across the nation.

They will help plan other content and coverage, including local college and high school sports. They must be able to juggle writing and editing duties and also work closely with the Gannett Florida sports editor and other Gannett sports editors around the state as well as our recruiting writer.

The ideal candidate will be collaborative by nature, have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise work, be proficient in the use of digital media, well-versed in using metrics to inform content decisions, have strong editing, writing and organizational skills and set high standards to elevate the quality of their work.

Candidates must be able to multi-task, have a strong knowledge of AP Style and good people skills. We interact daily with colleagues in newsrooms across Florida, as well as a digital optimization team and national design center.

The editor in this position will supervise a team of four sports writers and work with other local reporters, photographers, freelancers and interns.

The ideal candidate must have:

— Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.
— 5-7 years of relative work experience and 1-3 years of management/supervisory experience.
— Solid news judgment.
— Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
— Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO.
— Self-motivation and self-direction.
— Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
— Experience covering NASCAR a strong plus.
