Last summer APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor one college student as a member of our organization.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Ahern also asked sponsoring editors to help help mentor the student as they prepare to enter the profession.

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we'll be posting bios of the first wave of student members.

Today, meet a University of Washington freshman who got his first experience in the business covering high school sports for TST Media’s Minnesota Prep Hubs and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Name: Walker Orenstein

College status: Freshman at University of Washington.

Sponsoring member: Loren Nelson, Minnesota Hockey Hub managing editor

Experience: Cover high school hockey, football, lacrosse and basketball for TST Media’s Minnesota Prep Hubs network in partnership with the Star Tribune. Work as part-timer taking high school results and building outpages for various Hub sites.

How did you become interested in sports journalism? I grew up in a household busting at the seams with sports. With my fandom, I began to read the sports page daily which eventually grew into reading sports writing all over the Internet. I had always enjoyed writing, and so the idea of merging those two worlds seemed especially appealing.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? The most important thing I've learned at TST Media is to not be one-dimensional. I try to spread myself out and help all over the map. The more things I can do well and help with, the more valuable I am as an employee. To me that means never turningdown an assignment just because I am not familiar with it, and helping out with website work, phone calls, video editing, camera work, or whatever needs to be done.

Dream job? As a fan of the traditional newspaper, I would love to write regularly for a prominent published newspaper such as The New York Times or Washington Post.

Interests/hobbies/activities: Played varsity high school hockey at St. Paul Highland Park … have played saxophone since fifth grade in local jazz bands and the traditional band for four years at Highland Park … was editor of the school newspaper at Highland Park.
