APSE remains committed to recruiting and sponsoring college students as members of the organization.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to the How to Join page.

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we're posting bios of our student members.

Today, meet a Syracuse University senior sponsored by Jon Glass of TheNewsHouse.com.

College status: Senior newspaper and online journalism major at Syracuse University in 2013-2014

Sponsoring member: Jon Glass, executive producer of TheNewsHouse.com

Experience: Sports lead producer at TheNewsHouse.com (Jan. 2013-present), High school sports reporter at Eagle Newspapers (Aug. 2013-present), Digital news intern at NPR (June 2013-Aug. 2013), Sports desk intern at The Post Standard, Syracuse student reporter at Collegespun.com (June 2012-Jan. 2013).

How did you become interested in sports journalism? Before going to Syracuse University and even before writing for TheNewsHouse.com, I really didn’t know what I wanted to write about, just that I wanted to tell stories others could read. I’ve always enjoyed writing and also playing and watching sports, so I knew early on I wanted a career that mixed the two. I got my first taste of covering a nationally-ranked college team in Syracuse basketball as a sophomore, and after that experience I was hooked.

What's the most important thing you've learned? Stories aren't going to just be served right in front of you. Yes, an interesting idea might come up on its own, but as a reporter, I have to go out and find the story behind the idea. For instance, last summer at NPR, I was intrigued with Cuban athletes defecting to Latin America to play baseball in the United States, especially with the meteoric rise of LA Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig. My initial story was on Cuban defectors, but through talking with historians and agents, the real story wasn't the defectors, but how they were smuggling into Latin America to get the biggest contracts from MLB teams. No one told me to write a story about Cuban baseball smuggling, but after I had one idea, it led me to the final product.

Dream job? NFL or NBA team beat writer for a local or national news organization, print or online, broadcast or radio.

Hobbies/interests/activities: Playing pick-up basketball or football with friends or strangers, Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, researching statistics for teams and players and working out at the gym.
