Last summer then-APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor one college student as a member of our organization.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Ahern also asked sponsoring editors to help help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to http://apsportseditors.org/registration/

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we'll be posting bios of the first wave of student members.

Today, meet a Springfield College student sponsored by Mike Moran of the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

College status: Senior at Springfield college in 2013-14

Sponsoring member: Mike Moran, Daily Hampshire Gazette Sports Editor

Experience: Serve as Features Managing Editor at The Springfield Student, Springfield College's school newspaper. Interned at the Daily Hampshire Gazette for sports department. Interned at the Parkland Press for news department.

How did you become interested in sports journalism? I became interested in sports journalism my junior year of high school when I was deciding on a major. I've always loved to write, so I decided to look for a major that involved a heavy dosage of writing. When I discovered that certain colleges offered sports journalism as a major, I knew it was what I wanted to do.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Always approach every story with a fresh mindset. By approaching each story I am assigned as a new challenge, no matter how petty it may seem, it forces me to put forth my best effort to cover the story and do it justice.

Dream job? I would love to work on feature stories for any newspaper, no matter the section.

Hobbies/interests/activities: I am interested in playing sports of any kind, including but not limited to football, basketball, racquetball and baseball. I also enjoy reading on the side and running our FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) club on campus.

Joseph’s work appears on: scstudentedia.com on a weekly basis.

Follow Joseph on: I do not currently have a personal twitter account, which I know is a must for journalists in this modern age, but I plan on setting one up in the near future.
