Last summer then-APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor at least one college student as a member of our organization.

Recruiting and mentoring student members remains a priority under the leadership of APSE president Tim Stephens.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to http://apsportseditors.org/how-to-join/

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we're posting bios of the latest wave of student members.

Today, meet a Northwest Missouri State University junior sponsored by Stephens.

College status: Junior at Northwest Missouri State University, 2013-2014

Sponsoring member: Tim Stephens, Deputy Managing Editor, CBS Interactive – Sports; President, APSE

Experience: Worked for five semesters with the Northwest Missourian, primarily covering week-to-week operations and game days for the Northwest football team, as well as 2012 state champion Maryville High School football team. I am the assistant sports editor this year.

How did you become interested in sports journalism? My passion for the intricacies of sports run as far back in my life as I can remember, so it only seemed sensible to utilize my skill as a writer to follow a career path involving that passion.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? I’ll never be as interesting as the people I write about – my stories are for my readers, who care about the teams/players I’m covering, not about the person behind the keyboard.

Dream job? My dream and goal for my career is to own and manage a sports magazine. I’m not sure that I’ve decided what I’d like the content to be or what sports/teams to cover, but I feel feature-style magazine writing suits my skill set to a tee.

Hobbies/interests/activities: Watching sports whenever I get the opportunity, particularly our local Kansas City teams. I always enjoy reading my favorite columnists and writers in the business, both for entertainment and learning purposes.
