Last summer APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor one college student as a member of our organization.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Ahern also asked sponsoring editors to help help mentor the student as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to http://apsportseditors.org/registration/

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we'll be posting bios of the first wave of student members.

Today, meet a busy University of Miami graduate sponsored by Miami Herald sports editor Jorge Rojas.

Name: Christina De Nicola

APSE student member Christina De Nicola

College status: University of Miami 2011 graduate with a B.S. in journalism and sport administration with a minor in psychology.

Sponsoring member: Jorge Rojas, Miami Herald sports editor

Experience: Currently does freelance work for The Miami Herald's sport department, writing about everything from high schools to the NHL postseason. Covered the Florida Marlins and other big league teams as an associate reporter for MLB Advanced Media in 2011, where she remains a freelance contributor. Spent three years as an intern in the Miami Heat's business communications department writing stories for the game program and website. Editor-in-chief of the University of Miami's school newspaper, The Miami Hurricane, her senior year. Interned for Bleacher Report, Collegebaseballinsider.com and the Atlantic Coast Conference's football campus correspondent program. Voiced baseball games and sports talk shows for UM's radio station, "The Voice," 90.5 FM.

How did you become interested in sports journalism? "
I vividly remember typing up newsletters on my own, recapping Florida State football and Florida Marlins baseball on a Compaq computer when I was little. I would hand them out to family and friends. I had always played sports and aspired to be the next Mia Hamm."

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned?
"Treat every moment like an interview. What you put on social media, how you dress, how you act… You never know who's watching."

Dream job? "
I wake up (but then it's not a dream!) to find myself at the ballpark every day, working a Major League Baseball beat. I'm completely content as I hear the sound of the ball off the bat and the smell of Cracker Jack in the air."

Athletic background/interests/hobbies/activities:
"I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I was in middle school. I started for my high school varsity soccer and softball teams. One can occasionally find me competing in a once-fictional sport called Quidditch for the University of Miami's nationally ranked team."
