The Houston Chronicle put out three special sections in the span of three weeks as a part of its coverage of Katy High School’s third consecutive appearance in the Class 5A state championship football game and the University of Texas’ appearance in the BCS national championship game.

A local grocery store bought advertising to support a four-page section celebrating Katy’s attempt to win three straight Class 5A state titles. Despite the Tigers’ loss to Abilene in the finals, the section, which looked back at the 2009 season and Katy’s previous state championship game appearances, was delivered the day after the game to more than 30,000 subscribers who live in the Katy area.

As in 2006, the Chronicle covered Texas’ national championship game appearance with two special sections under the direction of Deputy Sports Editor Charlie Crixell. An eight-page preview section, which ran the day of the game, featured Texas quarterback Colt McCoy. The six-page game day section featured collaboration between writers from the Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News, along with the work of a team of sports copy editors in downtown Houston.
