The Sports Journalism Institute is beginning the process of selecting its intern class for the summer of 2009. Newspapers that are interested in hosting an intern should contact Sandy Rosenbush via e-mail (sandy_rosenbush@hotmail.com) as soon as possible since there only two slots remain open for host papers or Web sites.

Newspapers or Web sites hosting an intern are responsible for paying the student whatever is their usual rate for an intern or entry-level reporter/editor. The intern pays his or her own housing costs out of this salary (though we ask you help the intern find a place if he or she is new to your area).

SJI began in 1992 and has more than 160 graduates. Its goal has always been to increase the number of women and minorities in the sports media. Funding for SJI comes primarily from APSE, the Chicago Tribune Foundation and New York Daily News. The classroom portion of SJI is held at the Poynter Institute, which provides a state-of-the-art classroom, laptop computers and instruction by Poynter staff members to supplement the instruction of SJI leaders, APSE members and other newsroom professionals.
