Sen. John McCain will be the speaker at the Keynote Luncheon on Thursday, June 26, at the Associated Press Sports Editors Summer Conference.

The senator from Arizona will speak at the luncheon at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va.

McCain participated in football, tennis and baseball in high school, and was a standout wrestler. He also boxed at the United States Naval Academy. As a senator, he has been outspoken on sports-related issues, and spearheaded the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, which mandated that all professional bouts be supervised by a state commission and standardized safety measures across the country.

McCain was elected to congress in 1982 and to the senate three years later. He was the Republican nominee for president in 2008.

McCain served as a pilot in the Navy from 1958-1981, and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam from 1967-1973. He has been decorated with numerous awards, including the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
