Nearly 100 APSE editors are gathering in Orlando this month and, as always, it promises to be an experience well worth the time from every editor’s busy schedule.

Foremost, we’ll be selecting the nation’s best work in sports journalism. The work can be grueling, but it’s always rewarding. Simply having the opportunity to review true excellence is inspiring — but so are the many conversations with colleagues both during and after the judging sessions.

I encourage you to attend Saturday’s executive committee meeting prior to our opening reception. APSE has accomplished quite a bit since we last gathered in Boston. For instance, we’re on track to have our largest and most financially successful summer conference in several years in Chicago this June. And we’ve opened up the Red Smith Award election process to a large swath of membership. Nominations are presently under way.

We’ve invited Bob Gardner, executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations, to address editors at a reception following Sunday’s opening judging session. On Monday evening, we’ll be taking a field trip to Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex for a dinner and what I expect will be an engaging talk from author and six-time Emmy winner Jeremy Schaap.

Joining us informally will be Tim Frank, the NBA’s senior vice president of communications who is in town of course for the All-Star Game, and Matt Humphrey of NASCAR communications, who’ll be looking forward to reconnecting with old friends as he begins a busy week in preparation of the Daytona 500.

As I promised last year, we’ll be offering editors the opportunity of a resume review and career feedback session. An integral part of APSE’s mission is helping promote the professional growth of its members. These sessions are meant to help interested editors ensure they are showcasing the right skills and accomplishments to advance, and to point out areas to target for improvement. (If you are interested in signing up, please message me by Feb. 17).

I look forward to seeing you there.
