Tim Stephens, Florida Sports Topics Manager for the Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel, has been elected second vice president of the Associated Press Sports Editors, the organization announced Thursday.

Stephens will take office at the APSE summer conference later this month in Boston. He will join the leadership team of incoming president Michael Anastasi of the Salt Lake Tribune, incoming first vice president Gerry Ahern of Yahoo! Sports and third vice president Ben Brigandi of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.

Stephens will serve a one-year term as second VP, then a year as first vice president before becoming president in 2013.

He joined the staff at the Orlando Sentinel in 2003, working as a copy editor, assistant sports editor and deputy sports editor before being named Sports Topics Manager in 2009. In 2010, he took over responsibilities as Sports Topics Manager in Fort Lauderdale as well. His prior experience includes positions at the Birmingham Post-Herald, Mobile Register and Fort Payne (Ala.) Times-Journal.

Among Stephens' accomplishments include a stint as the executive director of the Orlando Sentinel High School Sports Reporting Institute, mentoring aspiring journalism students.

He has been an active participant in APSE since 2003, serving as a contest judge and speaking on various panels.
