As president of APSE (Associated Press Sports Editors), I would personally like to invite you to enter our annual APSE Student Contest for outstanding sports journalism. I would also encourage you to consider joining the growing ranks of campuses with an APSE Student Chapter as a means of providing students crucial networking and growth opportunities as they work toward a career in sports journalism.

First, a bit about Associated Press Sports Editors: APSE is the professional organization for sports editors, producers and directors across the country. Our membership includes newspapers as well as websites and other digital news organizations, including broadcast entities with digital platforms, from across the country and even around the world. We seek to serve news organizations from large to small, from The New York Times, USA TODAY Sports and ESPN.com to The Tuscaloosa News and Laramie (Wyo.) Boomerang.

We have a couple of initiatives that might be of interest to you (if you yourself are a student) or your students (if you’re an educator/adviser).

APSE STUDENT SPORTS JOURNALISM CONTEST

APSE will sponsor its third annual student sports journalism contest in 2019. Here are the details.

1. The contest is open to all APSE student members, and members of any APSE student chapter at any college or university. Annual dues for APSE student membership are a bargain, at just $25. There is information on how to start a chapter below.

Entries must come from students who have been enrolled at a college or university during the contest period of June 1, 2018-May 10, 2019, including graduate students.

2. The single contest category will be Portfolio. A student may enter only one portfolio. All work must have been done by the student alone – no co-byline material allowed. (For a video or multimedia entry, the content must be conceived, edited and produced by the student, but can involve someone else to operate a camera if the student is on camera.)

The portfolio will have five elements: (a) a feature story, (b) an enterprise story, (c) a breaking news story, (d) a multimedia or video item (not to exceed 30 minutes) and (e) a wild-card entry, which can be from the above categories or something else.

3. All work entered must have been published, but does not have to have been published in a student publication. It can be from an internship, from stringing with a local paper, writing for a website, etc. It cannot, however, be published only on the student’s own “see my work here” portfolio web page.

4. No redaction will be required and there is no anonymity for entries. All entries will be submitted via links to the published work.

5. Work must come from the period of June 1, 2018, through May 10, 2019.

6. The contest will be judged by at least five APSE member judges.

7. A top 10 will be chosen out of all entries, with the top 10 then ranked in order from first place to 10th.

8. Winners will be announced before or during the APSE Summer Conference, which will take place in June in Atlanta. A plaque will be awarded for first place. Printable certificates will be emailed to other top 10 finishers.

9. Details on how to enter will be distributed to all APSE student chapters and all APSE individual student members by April 20, and will be posted on the apsportseditors.com website and Facebook pages.

STUDENT CHAPTER REQUIREMENTS

Student chapters must apply and be approved by a vote of the APSE executive committee. To fulfill requirements to submit an APSE student chapter application, a prospective chapter must secure:

A faculty member who will serve as chapter adviser (chapter adviser pays the educator dues fee of $100 upon approval of chapter application by APSE executive committee)

A roster of interested chapter members, their academic classification and email addresses. To apply for chapter status, the application must include a minimum of 10 students who would pay dues upon approval of application. The dues structure is up to each chapter ($25 per student per academic year is suggested). All dues are retained by the chapter to use as it sees fit – to bring in speakers, send student members to conferences, buy pizza for chapter meetings, whatever.

A list of officers or potential officers. A proposed president for the chapter must be in place at time of application. It is recommended that each chapter also include a vice president and a secretary/treasurer.

A resume of the student chapter president.

A resume of the student chapter adviser.

An essay stating why you seek to establish an APSE student chapter and what you hope to achieve through affiliation with APSE. The essay should include details about the adviser’s involvement in the student chapter and also note any professional APSE members who have indicated their willingness to participate in your chapter.

An outline of your short- and long-term goals for the chapter, including proposed plans for the academic year (fund-raising, guest speakers, meeting frequency, etc.)

Written proof from your university that your chapter has or will seek to be recognized by your university as an official student organization. Also include requirements regarding such recognition that APSE should know about.
