Separate section judging for under-20,000

Fellow under-40,000 APSE member:

In a couple of weeks, many of us will be preparing entries for the APSE’s annual writing and section judging competition. I want to remind you of a change in the contest rules that may benefit some of you who are among our smaller newspapers, and how it will affect your entries.

New this year, there will be a separate section judging category for papers with circulations under 20,000. In all three divisions – daily, Sunday and special sections – papers under 20,000 will be considered in their own categories after the judging is completed in the under 40,000 division.

This change applies only to section judging. It does not apply to the writing contest.

Here are a few notes on how this affects you:

■ If your circulation is between 20,000 and 40,000, this doesn’t change anything you do. Submit your entries just as you normally would.

■ If your circulation is under 20,000, please note your exact circulation on the index card and write "U20" in large characters. A jpeg example is attached to this e-mail.

■ If your circulation is under 20,000 for daily but over 20,000 for Sunday, you can enter the U20 portion of the daily and special sections contest, but not the Sunday.

■ Regardless of whether you are under 20,000 or not, mail ALL of your entries to the under-40,000 contest catchers. All entries will still be considered in the U40 category before they are separated out for the U20.

More information should come out when the Contest Bulletin is published next month. If you have any questions, feel free to contact myself, Third VP Toby Carrig or Contest chair Garry Howard.
