The APSE Great Lakes region meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 21 and Monday, April 22 in Chicago.

Plans included a Chicago White Sox game Sunday afternoon and workshops Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT at Tribune Tower, 435 North Michigan Ave. Lunch will be served compliments of the Chicago Tribune.

Among the highlights is a session run by members of the South Bend Tribune sports staff, looking at how the Manti Te'o story at Notre Dame unfolded from start to finish with a focus on what lessons can be learned and how easily a story like this can happen where you work.

Here is the tentative lineup:

· Best practice for covering preps. Jeff Kuehn of the Oakland (Mich.) Press has put together a power point presentation highlighting what several outlets in Journal Register and Digital First Media are doing to improve high school sports coverage.

· The Manti Te'o story.

· Balancing big and small. It doesn't take a huge staff to do great project or investigation work. It does require planning, prioritizing and knowing your readership. Jim Owczarski of OnMilwaukee.com and others speakers lead a session about getting the job done.

· Innovative web ideas. Creative things that sports departments do on the web, how to use the latest technology and how to further engage your readers with your work. Ross Jacobson of the Daily Chronicle and others talk about the creative work they've done online.

· NFL Draft session. Speaker TBA. The draft begins three days after the region meeting.

On Sunday, the Chicago White Sox have a home afternoon game. Great Lakes region chair Jeff Kuehn will purchase tickets. Shoot him an email at jeff.kuehn@oaklandpress.com with the number of tickets you intend to purchase in the $30 range.
