By Dan Spears
Third Vice President

Greetings everyone — we’ve scheduled our third APSE Small-Paper Hangout — should have been in March, but April 1 is March-adjacent, right? Join us online at 4:30 p.m. ET Monday, April 1. Our topic this time — How To Go Outside Your Comfort Zone. While we, as sports journalists, naturally work to be good at writing stories about football, basketball and baseball, we can make a significant amount of gains (and create goodwill in our newsrooms and beyond) with stories about unique sports and people in our areas. Joining us will be:

  • Sports editor Julie Jag of the Santa Cruz Sentinel, who won APSE awards this year in Category D beat writing and game story as part of a two-person staff.
  • Writer Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald, who has won seven writing awards in the past two APSE contest, including two first-place honors this year in beat writing and explanatory reporting.

APSE small-paper editors should have received a Google calendar invite for this hangout. If you haven’t, and want to be added to the list, please email dan.spears@starnewsonline.com
