When is THE story a story at all?
We take a closer look at the ethics of reporting on sensitive information, using recent stories on athletes’ sexuality as an intro into the conversation. Michael Sams’ came out before the NFL combine in stories with ESPN and the New York Times. But the Columbia Missourian had knowledge of one of the most talked-about sports stories of the year several months before it became public but chose not to publish it. Grantland.com outed a transgender golf instructor who subsequently committed suicide resulting in a mea culpa by its editor. When do you go with the news? What makes it news? What decisions drive the publication schedule?
