Talk about changes.

The newspaper industry continues to undergo huge changes.

And APSE continues to change.

A year ago, I was a judge. This time around, I’m serving as contest chair with my duties as APSE’s first vice president.

Changes and challenges will be discussed at APSE’s Winter Conference in Kissimmee, Fla., beginning Saturday at the Radisson World Gate..

But one thing that hasn’t changed is APSE’s commitment to recognize professional excellence among its membership.

And APSE’s membership responded. There will be 77 judges from across the country in attendance when APSE president Garry Howard starts things off with the executive committee meeting at 5 p.m.

The hard work (or what Garry calls the toughest job you’ll ever love) starts early Sunday morning when the teams start deciding the best writing and the top newspaper sections from 2009.

Judges will get instructions and the 21 contest chairs will meet with their groups to formulate a plan for the next three to four days.

Judging groups will meet on Sunday in assigned rooms at the hotel starting at 8:30 a.m. Contest chairs will determine how the group will spend the rest of the day.

Also groups judging daily sections under 40,000 and 40-100,000 will be doing short critiques.

There will be a one-hour session Sunday night around 6 o’clock that will focus on social media in the workplace. Tim Stephens and Matt Humphrey will showcase the great work being done by The Orlando Sentinel. The plan is to broadcast the event on livestream.com, so even if you can’t make it to Florida, you’ll be able to watch from your computer.

Judges will be busy Monday. And hopefully at some point Tuesday, results will start to trickle in. Check back at apsportseditors.org for the first results.

Most judging groups will have completed work by Tuesday night. The remaining results will be posted Wednesday morning. The executive committee meeting will take place later Wednesday. There will be plenty to discuss.

You can keep up with APSE’s Winter Conference on Twitter at twitter.com/APSE_sportmedia. Judges are being asked to use #APSE when sending out Tweets.

And in case you have not heard, there’s been changes with my job. I have traded in my deputy badge. I’m now the sheriff in Knoxville. Big boots to fill as sports editor. I’ll try not to die with them on.

So follow the changes and the news starting Saturday at APSE’s Winter Conference.
