BOSTON — Being a sports editor is not just about assigning stories, graphics and photos. You're expected to be a leader. Your goal is to get the most from your staff to produce the best sports section possible. However, no one handed us an instruction book when we were named sports editors. In almost all cases, we were just expected to know how to run the department.

Now we know it's not that easy.

Jill Geisler and Butch Ward of the Poynter Institute will be in Boston to help.

A dynamic pair of instructors who draw upon their vast experience as newsroom leaders, Jill and Butch conduct leadership sessions all over the country and host editors for week-long training sessions at Poynter's headquarters in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jill was involved in broadcast journalism for 26 years before joining Poynter and she was the country's first female news director in a major market at age 27 at WITI in Milwaukee. Butch worked for 27 years at the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Baltimore News-American. They've been in the war room.

They will outline a sensible approach to leadership, with advice on how to foster an environment of collaboration, and inspiring your staff to do their best work while also holding people accountable. Both will be available after the general session for one-on-one discussions concerning your specific concerns. Problem employee? Time-managment problems? Finding it difficult to get your message to your staff? This is a chance to get a workable solution for a nagging problem.

Many times, people like to save the best for last. Your best hitter bats third, not first. Musicians usually save their best song for the closing number.

That's not what we're doing at the Boston Convention, Jill and Butch are scheduled for 10:45 Thursday morning.

This is the session all the others are going to have trouble matching. It's the one worth paying for — tell you boss it alone will be worth the registration fee.
